Solar Panel Systems

The Price Per Watt  is what you are looking for with solar panels and it should be for the whole system price.  Unlike the rest of the world where there are tax credits or incentives, none apply in BC. The Watts is based on the installed DC watts, which can be found by adding up the wattage of all the panels being installed.

If you buy a 5kW (5,000 watt) system and the cost is $14,000 before any credits, the system PPW is $2.80 per watt, 14000 divided by 5000.

The price should be for the gross price of the system.  Make sure this is in CDN dollars. The watts that you are looking at should be DC watts. On some quotes you may see AC watts along with kWh (kilowatt hours). When computing PPW, make sure you are using DC watts.

The price should include EVERYTHING. Some installers may give you a gross cost and then have some additional costs for permits or other items. This results in unexpected costs and is not the appropriate way to quote prices in the solar industry. The labor, material, financing, overhead, warranties, permits, and engineering should all be included.

At Simply Solar we will provide you with a complimentary 3+ page solar assessment for your specific location and system size with pricing.

When we install your solar panel system, the price includes all the necessary connectors, junction boxes, AC isolator, etc.

Here are some key factors that affect PPW:

  • Equipment quality: Brand name solar panels such as Econess Energy or Sharp are going to be more expensive than Tier 2 Chinese panels. The type of inverter used can lead to a price difference of as much as 30 cents per watt.  Try to make sure your inverter has a 10 yr warranty and that the warranty is shown on the installers website.
  • Roof Type: A composite shingle (asphalt) is usually less to install.  Installing on tile roof can increase system costs by as much as 10%. Steep roofs, raised seam metal roofs and ground mounts can add more costs as well.
  • Multiple Arrays: If your roof is a simple sloping surface the costs will be less than a roof with panels being mounted on multiple surfaces.

Extras: If you need an electrical panel box upgrade or cable trenching, you will be looking at some higher costs. A panel box upgrade typically costs between $1,500 and $3,000, while trenching will depend on the distance the conduits are required to be buried.  Some of this work can be completed by yourself if you prefer.
